this worked fine before and works with another sd-card with open elec on it. I then installed Raspbian (Raspberry Pi fork of Debian) and installed XBMC successfully, but the same two problems above persisted.

I can start xbmc with "sudo start xbmc" and this will launch a working xbmc for me. Browsing through the menu's seems to be fast, and responsive. However, whatever movie (avi, dvd .mkv) files I try to launch, system keeps on loading forever. These steps are not optimal and need to be refined, but they do result in a working build of XBMC that seems to work well within Raspbian.
